History
Buckeye was founded in 1888 by Thomas Newt Clanton, who named the community after his home state of Ohio, the Buckeye State. The Buckeye Canal brought irrigation water that transformed desert into farmland.
For over a century, Buckeye remained a small agricultural town serving the surrounding cotton and alfalfa farms. The 2000 census counted just 6,537 residents in what would become one of America's fastest-growing cities.
