History
Benicia was California's third state capital from 1853 to 1854, with the original State Capitol building still standing on First Street, now a State Historic Park.
The city was founded in 1847 by Robert Semple and Thomas O. Larkin, and named after Semple's wife, Francisca Benicia Carrillo de Vallejo, wife of General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo.
