Jeffrey City is not a neighborhood of Casper, Wyoming, but rather a remote, unincorporated community approximately 80 miles southwest of Casper along Highway 287. It is famously a near-ghost town, born from a 1950s uranium mining boom and subsequently abandoned when the industry collapsed in the 1980s. Today, it serves primarily as a pit stop for travelers heading to the Wind River Mountains or Yellowstone.

The character is defined by stark isolation, sweeping high-desert vistas, and the haunting remains of its boom-era infrastructure. Life here is for a very small, self-reliant population comfortable with extreme remoteness and harsh weather. The dominant feature is the sense of abandonment, with derelict buildings, including the famous abandoned school, standing as monuments to a fleeting boom.

Housing

Housing is extremely limited and consists mostly of a handful of occupied mobile homes, trailers, and repurposed old structures scattered among the widespread ruins. Many structures are in severe disrepair, with the vast majority of the original subdivision homes being completely uninhabitable.

Getting Around

Jeffrey City is accessible only by private vehicle via the two-lane Highway 287, a critical but often desolate route. Within the community, unpaved roads connect the sparse residences, and walking is feasible but distances are great and services are non-existent. The area is entirely car-dependent, with the next significant services being in Lander or Rawlins, each over an hour's drive away.

Dining & Shopping

The sole commercial establishment is the Split Rock Cafe & Bar, attached to the Split Rock Motel, which provides essential meals, fuel, and a gathering point. There are no grocery stores, pharmacies, or retail shops; residents must plan substantial shopping trips to Lander or Casper. The "shopping" experience for visitors is often limited to photographing the abandoned trading post and other decaying commercial buildings.

Parks & Recreation

Recreation is entirely wilderness-based, with the community acting as a gateway to world-class fishing on the Sweetwater River and hiking in the nearby Granite Mountains. The area is renowned for rockhounding, particularly for the Wyoming state gemstone, the jade found in nearby jade fields. There are no developed city parks or community facilities; the landscape itself is the amenity.
