Naval Square Neighborhood Overview
Naval Square is a distinctive residential neighborhood in Camden, New Jersey, located on the site of the former New York Shipbuilding Corporation. Its name and character are directly tied to its history as the former home of the Naval Shipyard, which operated for over a century and was a major employer in the region. The neighborhood is situated in the city's Waterfront South section, bordered by Broadway to the west and the Cooper River to the east, offering a unique blend of historical significance and modern redevelopment.
Today, Naval Square is characterized by a quiet, suburban-like feel within an urban setting, centered around a large, private, gated community. The neighborhood's master-planned design features tree-lined streets, sidewalks, and a central park, creating a cohesive and insular environment. Its location provides relative proximity to the Camden Waterfront attractions, including the Adventure Aquarium and BB&T Pavilion, while maintaining a residential separation from the city's more bustling commercial corridors.
Housing & Real Estate
The housing stock in Naval Square is almost entirely composed of modern, attached townhomes built in the early 2000s as part of the neighborhood's master-planned redevelopment. These homes typically feature brick and vinyl exteriors, two to three stories, garages, and small private yards or patios. The architectural style is uniform, promoting a neat and orderly streetscape that distinguishes it from Camden's older, more varied housing inventory.
Ownership is the dominant model within the gated community, with a high rate of owner-occupancy. Price ranges have historically been higher than the Camden median, reflecting the newer construction, amenities, and security features. Recent trends show that Naval Square properties have maintained value as a stable enclave, often appealing to those seeking Camden proximity with a controlled living environment. The surrounding areas outside the gate consist of more traditional South Camden row homes and some industrial lots.
Schools & Education
Families in Naval Square are served by the Camden City School District. The designated neighborhood elementary school is often the nearby Henry L. Bonsall Family School, which has undergone significant district-led transformation efforts in recent years. For middle and high school, students typically attend district schools such as Creative Arts Morgan Village Academy or other magnet and choice options available within the Camden system.
Given the district's historical challenges, many residents explore alternative educational options. These include highly-regarded charter schools such as KIPP Cooper Norcross Academy and Freedom Academy, which have campuses in Camden. Proximity to Rutgers University–Camden also provides a collegiate atmosphere and potential community resources, though the neighborhood itself is not directly adjacent to the university campus.
Parks & Recreation
The centerpiece of Naval Square's recreational space is its namesake, Naval Square Park, a privately-maintained green space at the heart of the gated community. This park features walking paths, playgrounds, and open lawns, serving as a communal backyard for residents. Its maintained condition and security are key amenities that attract families and those seeking outdoor space within the city.
Beyond the gates, the neighborhood is close to the Cooper River Park system, which offers extensive trails, crew racing, fishing, and festival spaces along the river. The nearby Gateway Park and the Camden Waterfront provide additional walking and biking paths with views of the Philadelphia skyline. However, access to larger, public city parks within Camden itself, such as Pyne Poynt Park, requires a short drive or bike ride.
Local Dining & Shopping
Naval Square itself is primarily residential, with no major commercial corridors within the gated community. For daily necessities, residents typically drive to shopping centers in nearby suburbs like Cherry Hill or to larger stores in Pennsauken. The closest in-city grocery option is the Save A Lot on Admiral Wilson Boulevard, with more full-service supermarkets located just outside Camden's borders.
Dining options in the immediate vicinity are limited but include a few longstanding local fixtures and casual eateries along Broadway and Ferry Avenue. For a wider variety of restaurants, cafes, and shops, residents most commonly look to the adjacent suburbs or travel into Philadelphia via the PATCO Speedline or the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. The redeveloping Camden Waterfront offers some chain dining, but the neighborhood's isolation means it does not have a traditional "main street" commercial district.
Who Lives Here
Naval Square attracts a specific demographic: primarily young professionals, couples, and small families who work in Camden, Philadelphia, or at the nearby universities and hospitals. Many residents are drawn by the affordability of newer housing compared to Philadelphia suburbs, the ease of commute, and the security and aesthetic consistency of a planned community. The population is a mix of long-time Camden residents seeking upgraded housing and newcomers employed by the city's anchor institutions.
The community vibe is quiet, private, and family-oriented, with a strong emphasis on neighborliness within the gates. Residents often form tight-knit associations and utilize the private park as a social hub. This creates a distinct micro-community that feels somewhat separate from the broader fabric of Camden, appealing to those who want to contribute to the city's revitalization while living in a controlled, modern environment.
